Petition MPI
Manitoba Public Insurance has adopted a policy where law abiding car owners will not be allowed to legally insure they're cars without government approved immobilizers installed. Cars which are on their list of "most at-risk" vehicles to be stolen will no longer be insured without a government sanctioned immobilizer installed.
As the proud owner of a rusty banged-up fifteen year-old car, which also happens to be on "the list", I find this a little outrageous. My car is not worth the cost of an immobilizer, and frankly if someone wants to steal my car I wish them the best of luck.
I would have no problem with the policy if I were able to find another insurance company, but in Manitoba you can't. In Manitoba you can't legally drive you're car if you're not insured. And you can only insure your car with the government-mandated monopoly Manitoba Public Insurance.
After a series of articles in the Winnipeg Sun by Tom Brodbeck, I'm also quite concerned about the irreparable damage this sucker's going to cause to my car. My car is actually about three different cars Frankenstein'd together, and having some witless hack who usually installs car stereos under my hood doesn't instill a lot of confidence. But my car runs great because the hatchetman behind it is very talented at what he does, but the MPI "certified professional" installing the immobilizer is unlikely to have the same magic touch.
Just for fun, the letter I received from MPI closes with the statement, "Get the theft protection you and your newer vehicle deserve." Clearly this concept is designed to target "newer vehicle" owners, not people who own old cars that are worthless.
If you're in agreement with me, please sign this petition by The Canadian Tax Payers Federation to have this policy reversed. It's a travesty that we have a government that feels it needs to control such minute aspects of our lives.

Thank god I live in BC now! I CAN'T BELIEVE A 1990 Honda Civic >WAGON< is on that list!!!! Being knowledgable about the civic wagon and the people that drive them, I can say with a great deal of certainty that there are no more than 30 to 40 of them in all of Manitoba, and I have 3 of them! I've NEVER heard of one of them being stolen. CRX's and Hatchbacks, i can understand. I've personally had attempts of theft on hatch's and rex's, never my wagon.
The only good thing about MPI is they have offices everywhere, and the insurance is fairly cheap in comparison to the rest of the country.
Without my %30 discount in BC, the rate was $1668/yr. In manitoba it was TO THE DOLLAR half that at $834/yr. Identical coverage.
Fill me in, how much would i have to pay to get this imobilizer installed if i moved back to .mb.ca. My car and your car have been under the supervision of the same 'HATCHet man' my car is assembled from 2 other lesser wagons, some hatchbacks and crx's.

I went, had dinner, and this was all i could think about.
For those of you who's cars aren't on the list, they will be. Let's say this little plan of MPI's works, thieves won't stop stealing cars, They will move on to other ones! Eventually every single car will be on 'the list'.
There is a simple way to make sure your car doesn't get stolen. You go to any store and buy an automotive on/off switch. You wire it to your fuel pump and hide the switch somewhere, anywhere in the car. Park the car, turn off the fuel pump. When they do try to steal your car they will assume either your car is out of gas or that it's a broken down pile. We are talking about $8 in parts and maybe an hours worth of time depending on how fancy you wanna be with your switch. You could wire your A/C switch so that it actually controls your fuel pump. Get clever! The only way to stop these bastard thieves is to outwit them, and the fuel pump cut switch is the cheapest and best way to do it. A thief doesn't have hours to spend tracing wires around your car being a repairman and wondering why it won't start.
It's up to the vehicle owner to make sure that your cars don't get stolen.
Fraud is a huge problem with auto theft as well.
FUEL PUMP SWITCH!

FUEL PUMP SWITCH!
ya, I agree. those auto immobilizers are bound to be compromised by intelligent thieves anyway. They're always one step ahead of the game
Hmmm, that fuel pump switch sounds very interesting. I'll have to get you to look after that for me while you're around Court :)
And if the entire music industry can't develop a way to stop people from stealing their music, how the hell is MPI supposed to stop people from stealing cars? The sad fact is that people will always figure out a way to steal shit, the only thing that can stop theft is vigilance, and locking theives up... and possibly bear-traps on the peddles.
