David Suzuki, Meet Kim Jong-Il
David Suzuki and Kim Jong-Il have something in common, a hatred of cars.
And for David Suzuki's view of Canada in twenty years...
NORTH Korean leader Kim Jong-Il has ordered the seizure of all Japanese-made cars in the communist country after he spotted a broken-down model blocking a road. [...]
It remains to be seen whether North Korean authorities will be able to implement the order fully, because most of the cars operating in the country are Japanese, Yonhap said.
And for David Suzuki's view of Canada in twenty years...
Our cities will be more livable places because we won't be using cars nearly so much.
We'll have a live in a radically different way. We'll basically live, work and play in the same area, we won't need cars to cover that distance. We'll have to have dense pockets of settlement, connected to each other by rapid transit. [...]
We've got to start using taxation to encourage the things we want and discourage the things we don't want. We should pull back taxes on personal income and we should be taxing the hell out of pollution and carbon is one of those pollutants.

it's especially easy for a guy like him to make predictions like that, when he's so old he'll never live the 20 years that it'll take for people to prove him embarassingly wrong

I agree. I demand David Suzuki's personal and foundation incomes be taxed at 105% effective today.

Wow... You're all ridiculous.
Why be harsh on a guy who just wants places to be more liveable and less destructive?
Why do we subsidize oil 1.5 billion annually when they're the largest companies in the country?
Why don't we grow up? Why doesn't alberta quit fucking around and do what they do best, drill holes, but do it instead to generate geothermal energy not shit that creates the smog that's given every child asthma when it used to be fairly uncommon?

I agree that saving the environment is a noble cause. But the problem with Suzuki is that he wants to crush our economy. It's not that he thinks we shouldn't pollute, he just thinks we should pay other countries, who are bigger polluters, when we do.
Thats not to mention the fact that he and his ilk aren't willing to debate the idea that global warming exists to begin with.
Sure it's harsh, but it's pretty harsh to tell people that they shouldn't heat their homes or drive their cars too, isn't it?

Nate,
Your understanding of Suzuki's position is simply wrong. It seems you haven't actually heard what he has to say.

Put simply, he believes not in 'not heating homes or driving' but in heating homes efficiently and driving fuel-efficient vehicles. He's not about living in the woods if that's what you're thinking, but about using all of our resources wisely and making sure polluters, well, pollute less.
And, no, there is no longer a debate about global warming (though it should be called 'climate change'). Get over it. The ratio of scientists that agree to disagree is about 2000 to 20. There are great, complex, advanced models that show that things are changing in a way they haven't before and that it is easily identified as the result of humans.
