Has Canada Sobered Up?

Shocking news today from Babbling Brooks. Canada's ranking in per capita beer consumption is at the embarrassing low of #19 in the world (h/t SDA). Even American's drink more beer than we do in the great white north.

While it would be safe to venture that the numbers presented were skewed slightly due to the NHL lockout of 2004, it still does not explain the trend. It's definitely not due to a lack of effort on the part of our troops:
One day, which had seen intense fighting in and around the city of Kandahar, the Canadian forces had been informed that each man and woman would be permitted two beers that night. While the majority of the soldiers were overjoyed, O’Neil —being an escort for all foodstuffs in the region—was required to suit up and perform one of the world’s most dangerous beer runs. In comical retrospect, it was one of the most quintessentially Canadian things he’d ever done.

While our troops continue to drink for the cause, Alan at the Beer Blog has some good ideas for domestic policy. Most notably, a National Beer Program (NBP) that includes a North American Free Beer Agreement (NAFBA). The NAFBA is an key aspect of the NBP, because we need to keep our seniors lubed up while they winter down south.

Mexico will need to do some hard work if they're going to participate in the NAFBA. They rank a pathetic 30th in per capita consumption. Every girl who's had a Corona will testify that it's over-priced, watered-down garbage. Though it's not for a lack of trying. Mexico drinks plenty, but they suffer from an over-reliance on Tequila.

Also standing in Mexico's way are some strange backwards-traditions. The worst of which is the idea of putting a lime in a beer. I'll only say this once.... beer and fruit do not mix. That doesn't apply only to Mexico either, that goes for those freaks on the east coast of Canada who like putting limes in their Mooseheads. What's next, a Cantelope in a Kokanee? Pineapple with your Pilsner? We must put this trend to a stop immediately.

With our three nations drinking beer side-by-side-by-side, we have an opportunity to create a continent-wide beer-culture that will transcend borders. Beer drinkers around the world could come to North America to see how people drink beer in many different settings, from Whitehorse to New Jersey to Guadalupe.

Canada's reputation is on the line here folks. As a wise man once said "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what beer you can drink for your country". I suggest all go to Dust My Broom and celebrate Friday Night Blues and Beer. And don't forget to write your MP, showing your support for the NBP and the NAFBA.
