My Computer, and The Masters

My Computer is the greatest. I'm working this poor girl like a slave, and she doesn't even bitch or moan. I've been working Photoshop, ImageReady, Dreamweaver, Windows Media Player, 3 FTP clients, Outlook, Acrobat, and a couple of web browsers open all moring - working out hard. And she just keeps on purring. She's had problems with spyware in the past, Windows XP was a virus she was born with - and lives with to this day; and she lives in one of the most smoke-concentrated environments man/computer-kind has ever existed in. She's a toughie though, and I love her. I'll talk about her sexy cousin, LCD Display, some other time... and her drunken uncle Digi Cam, along with her long-lost brother Printer McNeverused.

In exactly two days time The Masters Tournament will begin. It is the greatest golf tournament in the world. Augusta golf course is the greatest on the planet. Bobby Jones found the perfect piece of land for gorgeous golf, and his reputation created the best attended golf tournament in the world.

Bobby Jones is not well known to non-golfers. He is the equivelant of Babe Ruth in baseball, and the era. He had two ticker-tape parades thrown for him in New York. Babe Ruth played for cash, Bobby Jones didn't. After he got his BA, he got his engineering degree, and a law degree when he quit golf. He quit golf at the age of 28. As by far, the most accomplished player who'd ever played the game.

These days all you hear is Tiger Woods this, that and the other thing. Ya, this gonna turn into a Tiger-hate. Bobby Jones played his entire career as an amateur. He never took a dime for winning a tournament. He played as an amateur his entire life. Amateur is a word in current society that is associated with somebody who is "less-capable", especially in Sports. In most cases it's probably true, too. Bobby Jones was a different fellow though, he did it for shits and giggles... and he was damn good.

Tiger Woods has won ten career majors, he's twenty-nine. Bobby Jones won thirteen majors, he retired at twenty-eight (and didn't play for money). Jack Nicklaus won eighteen career majors.

Both Tiger, and Jack Nicklaus won many of their majors at The Masters, which didn't exist until Bobby Jones made it happen after he retired (at the age of 28). So don't hand Tiger the 'greatest of all-time' title too early. He's already well-behind Bobby Jones' age->major ratio. He's also nowhere near Jack's career major's.... yet. Good Masters Week.
Comments:
meh, forget about all this talk about the masters, get your clubs all cleaned up, and get ready to lose some money to me on the course this summer.

If Windows XP is a virus, why not 'clean' it by running Linux? Let me guess: "I would, but I can't run ...", or, "I would, but it can't ..." All the Linux hardcores are either dismissive of mainstream technology, which is where the money is, or, if they do accept new technology, they're working on trying to keep up with Microsoft (see the Mono Project for details. And as soon as you've used Microsoft's development tools; pfft, their competitors are at least 2 years behind, which is decades in other industries.
Microsoft's only fear is the future: 5-7 years from now OSes won't be much more than a thick browser, and Microsoft didn't see this early enough. But if anyone's going to capitalize on this, it'll be Google, and only because they're a for-profit corporation. (That sounded much more right-wing than my usual comments here).
