Harper and Softwood Lumber

Two months and three weeks after being sworn into office, Stephen Harper has accomplished what Paul Martin could not in over two years. A potential end to the softwood lumber dispute. Lets also not forget how much lip service Paul Martin gave this issue, and I'm sure the Liberal's won votes because of his 'outrage'.

Of course, there will be many who will bitch and complain about the deal. I tend to agree, that the legal decisions made by NAFTA and the WTO should be applied, in Canada's favor. But the US government refuses to abide by those rulings, so we should be prepared to take whatever we can get. The only other option would be to play the "waiting game", and Canada's the only side that loses by waiting.
Comments:
I'm glad that Stephen F. Harper is getting things done, but we'll have to wait and see if the Canadian timber industry agrees to this deal. But I don't think you'll find any successful businessmen who have made it by "taking what they can get," and I hope the timber industry doesn't settle for less because of a stubborn administration.

You're right, the industry is split. Check this. It also states, not too surprisingly, that Eastern Canada is the part of the country that doesn't think the deal is good enough.

And you're right, not a lot of successful businessmen would "Take what they can get". Most would take the MOST that they can get, and in this case... those two just happen to be the same thing.

Would you have the timber companies lose millions of dollars for 4 more years, and just HOPE that something better comes up?

Also, the American's aren't completely happy with it either.

As long as nobody is happy... lol

The provinces are ok the only industry that is bitching seems to be Tembec but then again they overextended themselves with capital gains and are possibly looking for a strawman to pinit on,.
