As Smug as a Slug
The people that run the movie industry are idiots. Firstly, because they keep rejecting my script. It's a movie called "Canadian Sheppard's Pie", and its a very unique script. Basically the premise involves a bunch of teenagers (they would be played by the finest actors in their mid-late-twenties who are physically attractive). The setting is a school, and basically they run around pulling shinanigan's and fucking each other over non-stop, until there are consequences.... possibly deadly consequences.... PROBABLY totally meaningless consequences that only a fourteen year old girl would bat an eye at (my appologies to the fourteen year old girls out there who are reading this, it's nothing personal, you're just logically handicapped).
Anyway, the second reason that the Movie Inudustry types are stupid, is their pathetic attempt at online distribution. Presumably, they are trying to prevent mass online piracy, much like the music industry claims to have suffered (though the industry is now being investigated for fixing prices - no wonder everybody says musicians make too much money!).
The Movie industry is screwing this up big time. The highlights of this 'tactic':
So basically the plan is to make the movies playable ONLY on your 15" monitor, you can't see the movie any sooner (trip to the video store: 15 minutes - download a DVD-quality movie: ~12hrs). All these perks, for the low-low-price of $30/movie. Charge more, and give the consumer less.
Thanks, but No Thanks! I would never advocate digital piracy, copyright infringement, or breaking the law out of pure spite; but in this instance, I think The Pirates have got the upper hand. As it stands currently, you don't need to wait for a movie to come out on DVD, you can usually get it online a few days after it's released (though not in DVD quality). You don't pay a dime for the illegal versions (though you run the risk of being severely infected by Spyware, virii, and the like). And you can currently convert/copy/share the shit out of any files you download 'illegally'. Oh, and did I mention it doesn't cost a dime?
I can't imagine a single illegal-downloader out there who would contemplate this new service. You'd have to be a complete fool. I can understand iTunes users, because they've managed to make the service cheap enough that people can use it (and thats with the industry illegally fixing the prices too!), but at $30-$40 for a digital copy of a movie, I can't see it flying.
I will give them props for one thing though. They're not quite as stupid as others who tried to sue the shit out of every person who downloaded a music file. At least they're getting the idea, sort of. It still doesn't square us for not buying the rights to my movie though.

Major studios today will make mainstream movies available for downloading the same day they are released on DVD
...
But movie fans will pay for the convenience: Downloadable flicks such as "Brokeback Mountain," "King Kong" and "Pride and Prejudice" may cost as much as twice what the DVD versions do and play only on a personal computer. New releases can't be rented online, just purchased.
