CTV.ca | Emerson says he might support floor-crossing law

Haha! So David Emerson has agreed to support a law, which would require MP's who switch parties to re-run in a byelection.

So what? I find it funny how the media in this country is trying to turn this into a big deal. It's the same thing that happened with Stronach, except the timing. It's a shitty move, but it happens.

What I don't understand, is why everybody is talking about a law requiring byelections. WHY DON'T WE HAVE RE-CALL LEGISLATION!?!? The fact that the people in BC who are represented by Emerson LEGALLY CAN'T FORCE HIM TO RESIGN, is pretty scary.

Have you ever wondered how guys like Hitler got into power? Well, now you know. Not that I'm comparing Emerson to Hitler of course. The fact that we the people of Canada have so little control over our government, at any time other than election time, should be concern to any Canadian. It also explains why these politicians show such arrogence, and contempt for the public at times.

It's really rather ridiculous if you think about it. An MP does something - like say, voting for gay marriage - against the will of his constituents. What does the public have as a recourse? Pay him for 4 more years, and then vote him out. And guess what? He'll still get a fat-ass government pension!

Re-call legislation would also cover one other MAJOR problem with the electorate in this country. This issue we have with non-confidence votes. Does it really make sense that the government gets to vote on when to disolve the government? These clowns are supposed to be accountable to us, so why aren't we responsible for pulling the trigger?

HARPER SHOULD PUT THIS IN HIS ACCOUNTABILITY LEGISLATION!!! That would be accountability. This should be a big deal! And because this is such a diverse minority government, there's no better time to get it passed.
